WESTERN PA - May 2007 — The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 66 has recently supported Autism Speaks and the Spina Bifida Association of Western PA in their endeavors to support individuals of these disabilities. The Operating Engineers Local 66 is represented by more than 7,000 members in 36 counties in Western Pennsylvania and Ohio.

"There is nothing more important or rewarding than to be included in causes that help to support the quality of life for a child or person afflicted with a disability such as autism or Spina Bifida," said business manager, James T. Kunz, Sr., Operating Engineers Local 66.

The Operating Engineers are supporting the 8th Annual Pittsburgh Walk for Autism Research event on Saturday, June 2. In addition to providing walkers for the day's events, the Operating Engineers are a bronze sponsor, providing a $2,500 donation.

The Woodlands provide summer programs for children, teens and adults with Spina Bifida, in addition to facilities for independent living. The Operating Engineers have provided a $3,000 donation to assist with the construction project being performed by Massaro Construction. "It is our hope that this donation will help support the Spina Bifida Association construct a quality facility that meets the needs of those at camp and their families."

Most recently, on April 28, the Operating Engineers also completed many home improvement projects as a partner of Rebuilding Pittsburgh Together. Joining about 400 skilled trades people, they volunteered time and skills and joined in on the largest volunteer home rehabilitation initiative in America.

Western PA - April 5, 2007 — A project supported by hundreds of volunteers from the building trade unions and corporate sponsors, Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh Project is a charitable day that will go on to improve the lives of neighbors for days on end. This year, Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh will be held on April 28, at 29 homes, one community center, and two community parks.

"It is a very important, and needed project in our community," said James T. Kunz, Jr., business manager, International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 66. "Our members look forward to this day as it is an opportunity for us to give of our skill, talent and time to improve the lives of our neighbors."

Operating Engineers' members who sign up to volunteer on April 28 will join various teams that plan to replace and repair many roofs, make homes more accessible for the elderly home owners — adding a first floor bathroom for example, and making homes safer with improved heating and electricity. Two community parks in Lawrenceville will receive a facelift as well.

About 400 skilled trades people representing local trade unions will volunteer their time and skills. In addition, 800 individuals representing corporations, civic groups, congregations, schools, and hospitals volunteer their time to improve the living conditions of homeowners in Allegheny County.

REBUILDING TOGETHER is a non-profit organization that rehabilitates the houses of low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly or have disabilities, so they may continue to live in warmth, safety and independence. Nationally, this organization was founded in 1988 and is the largest volunteer home rehabilitation initiative in America.
